Choosing The Right Heater For You

Paul Cook | 5th Jan 2015

With winter looming, there is an important task at hand. Stay warm! Fortunately we live in a day and age that offers many options to do just that. Still, with so much to choose from, how do you pick the heater that’s right for you? Hear are some tips and points to ponder.

Gas or Electric?

If you are looking for supplemental heat, you need a space heater. Space heaters are designed for different purposes and basically fall into the categories of gas or electric. There are pros and cons to consider for each. Gas heaters may be more energy efficient and will run during a power outage (assuming you have enough fuel), but they cost more initially and can be dangerous if you do not have adequate ventilation in the area they are used. Electric heaters are less expensive initially, can be used safely indoors without ventilation, and can help keep your overall electric bill down. Keep in mind they require electricity, so in a power outage, a generator would be needed.

Convection, Radiant, or a Combo?

Since electric space heaters have been deemed safest for indoor heating, most consumers shop within this category. Electric space heaters can be broken down into convection and radiant heaters. Convection heaters contain a sealed heat transfer liquid, such as oil, that is warmed by an electric heating element. Many have fans that help circulate the warm air in a room. They are very energy efficient for heating a larger room for a short period of time. Radiant heaters reflect heat using an infrared technology. It is most effective in smaller spaces for a short period. The best heaters on the market use a combination of convection and radiant heat. Most refer to these space heaters as panel heaters. They blend approximately 80% of the convection technology with 20% of radiant. They are highly energy efficient and warm large areas quickly and quietly. So, you can see why they are gaining popularity.

Space heaters are an excellent supplemental heat for staying warm without running up your heating bill. Heat the space you are in, and choose a heater best designed for the space. Remember that even though some heaters may seem like a greater expense upfront, the savings you receive through the winter may be well worth it. It may be cold outside, but with electric space heaters, staying warm has never been more obtainable!
